Public Consultation Begins on Updated Source Protection Plan and Assessment Report

Essex -The Essex Region Source Protection Committee has updated the source protection plan as well as updated the technical information contained within the assessment report.The source protection plan contains a series of policies developed in consultation with the local community to protect drinking water sources from existing and future threats.

The public is invited to review the changes and provide written comments until December 24, 2014. The source protection plan and assessment report will then be re-submitted, along with all public comments received, to the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change for approval.

"The updates to the source protection plan and assessment report bring us one step closer to approval by the Province," said Tom Fuerth, Chair of the Source Protection Committee. "Provincial approval may take place by mid-2015."

In addition to making the required amendments, the Essex Region Source Protection Committee updated the SPP to include the following:

  • New technical work for the updated Assessment Report resulted in the identification of new vulnerable areas which were added to all existing fuel policies;
  • The Essex Region SPC determined that microcystin-LR is a Drinking Water Issue at Lake Erie intakes and new policies have been written for continued and/or improved environmental monitoring and education and outreach;
  • A new policy was added requiring Risk Management Plans for the storage of hazardous waste or liquid industrial waste at sites that are not subject to an Environmental Compliance Approval and;
  • New phrasing for the policy on the transportation of fuels to make policies consistent across the province.

Hard copies can be viewed in person at the Essex Region Conservation Authority during regular business hours at 360 Fairview Avenue, Essex.

A Public Meeting will be held to allow the public the opportunity to view the documents and interact with staff and Source Protection Committee members on December 11, 2014 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Essex Civic and Education Centre, 360 Fairview Ave., Essex
